Even a dip in the air temperature couldn’t put a chill on the Get Outdoors. Go Fish! Youth Fishing Derby in Jasper, Ala., held Saturday in association with the Walmart FLW Tour event presented by Evinrude on Lewis Smith Lake. Ninety-five youngsters participated in the derby, with several of them catching fish.

The children and their families had plenty of room to spread out around the Smith Lake Dam cove, which proved to be a good place to fish as it was also the site where the FLW release boat unloaded fish caught by the pros during Friday’s round.

All participants received a rod and reel from Lil’ Anglers and FLW, and DMF Bait Company donated the night crawlers used for bait. In addition, the participants were given a registration form that provided them with a chance to win a VIP fishing trip with a pro. Emri Hannah was the lucky winner.

FLW staff and friends Johnny Douglas, Mike Devere, Hoyt Tidwell, Ginger Maxfield, Janet Fawbush and John Jacobs helped the kids register and rig up their fishing outfits, then assisted in the derby where needed. Special fishing advice and assistance were provided by the Oakman High School Fishing Team.

Pro anglers also lent a hand throughout the afternoon. These included Charlie Evans, Jimmy Reese, Jay Yelas, Pete Ponds, Tom Redington, Kevin Stewart, Cody Meyer, Jimmy Houston and Scott Canterbury.
