Walleye will again be able to migrate out of Lake Erie and up the Sandusky River and its tributaries to spawn thanks to a federal grant that will be used to remove the Ballville Dam near Fremont, Ohio.

The $2 million grant from the Great Lakes Fish and Wildlife Restoration Act fund will help the Ohio Department of Natural Resources remove the dam. ODNR officials expect the first phase of the dam’s removal to be completed in 2012.

Once the dam is removed, 22 miles of the Sandusky River will be open to spawning walleye, allowing for more spawning and creating new fishing opportunities farther upstream.
