Wheeler Lake has turned out to be beyond stingy to the anglers fishing the second event in the Toyota Series Southeastern Division today. After visiting with some 20 pros this morning, the most fish reported caught by a pro was just two keepers. The rest either had just one bass or an empty livewell.

That’s not a huge surprise given the time of year this tournament takes place. Wheeler can fish extremely tough when it’s hot outside and water temps are way up – especially with all the pressure the fishery has received this summer.

Several boats started on the Decatur Flats, which did not fire at all early. The rain held off for most of the morning, yielding just partly cloudy skies and a south wind. Very little current could be seen running down the main channel, which doesn’t usually help the bite.

One angler who did get off to a great start this morning, though, was co-angler Cal Culpepper, who had completed a five-bass limit. Hopefully some more limits will show up by weigh-in time at 2 p.m. CT.
