Competition begins at EverStart Lake Eufaula

EUFAULA, Ala. – A light rain didn’t dampen enthusiasm this morning at Lake Point State Park as 330 pros and co-anglers took off onto Lake Eufaula anticipating a big day of fishing for bedding bass. It’s spawning season for the Eufaula bass, and that should translate into heavier-than-normal catch weights for most anglers throughout the second tournament of this year’s EverStart Eastern Division.

With the spawning activity, the bass have come up shallow. Many of them are sitting in water just 3- to 6-feet deep.

“The bite is awesome,” pro Koby Kreiger of Osceola, Ind., said this morning. Kreiger, a sight-fishing specialist, has a history of doing well in tournaments where the fish are up on the beds. “The rain shouldn’t affect anything at all. It should be one of the best tournaments we’ve ever had, really.”

Optimism aside, a heavy cloud cover could slow down the bite just a bit on day one. But chances are good that a number of 20-pound five-fish stringers could cross the scale today.

Weigh-in begins today at 3 p.m. at Lake Point State Park located at 104 Lake Point Drive just north of Eufaula. The four-day tournament lasts through Saturday, when the winning pro will receive $15,000 and a Ranger boat. The winning co-angler will receive $6,000.
