Grigg wins Red Man bass event on Lake Murray

PROSPERITY, S.C., (Feb. 14, 2000) – Eric Grigg, 37, of Shelby, N.C., out fished the competition Saturday to earn $6,000 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points in the Red Man Tournament Trail Carolina Division opener on Lake Murray.

Grigg caught five bass weighing 22 pounds, 5 ounces during the one-day event to edge out David Wright of Lexington, N.C., who finished with a five-bass catch of 16-10 worth $3,000. Grigg fished black and blue jigs around rocks near the dam.

David Stewart of Boiling Springs, S.C., placed third and collected $1,500 for five bass weighing 15-15. Bill Noah of Thomasville, N.C., who earned $1,300 for four bass weighing 15-13, and Marc Leech of Gastonia, Ga., who received $1,200 for five bass weighing 15-11, followed in fourth and fifth place respectively. Noah also won the tournament’s Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $1,000 in the Pro Division for an 8-pound largemouth.

In the Co-Angler Division, the top five finishers were competing in their first Red Man tournament. First place and $3,000 went to Kevin Delesandro, 27, of Blackstop, S.C., for three bass weighing 10-9. Second place and $1,500 went to Jeff Hyder of Union, S.C., for three bass weighing 10-1, while Carey Nix of Liberty, S.C., took third place and $750 with one bass weighing 7-11. Nix also collected $500 form Abu Garcia for catching the biggest bass in the Co-Angler Division.

Goodwin wins Red Man bass event on Lake Havasu

LAKE HAVASU, Ariz., (Feb. 14, 2000) – Mike Goodwin of Lake Havasu, Ariz., braved wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph Saturday to earn $3,152 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points by winning the Boater Division of the Red Man Tournament Trail Colorado River Division season opener on Lake Havasu.

Goodwin, a 45-year-old construction worker, caught five bass weighing 15 pounds, 9 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Bobby Horn of Lake Havasu who finished with a five-bass catch of 13-6 worth $1,576. Goodwin fished a brown and purple jig and 3/8-ounce spinnerbait in the upper half of the lake.

Robert Porter of Lake Havasu placed third and collected $788 for five bass weighing 13-1. Larry Bond of Lake Havasu who earned $683 for five bass weighing 12-10 and Paul Hines of Las Vegas, Nev., who received $630 for five bass weighing 11-13, followed in fourth and fifth place respectively.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,576 went to Chris Trombatore of Yuma, Ariz., for three bass weighing 10-2. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $591went to Kirk Beardsley of Orange County, Calif., and David Parker of Signal Hill, Calif., for five bass weighing 8-1, while Brent Becker of Las Vegas took fourth place and $342 with four bass weighing 7-13.

Beardsley, 41, also won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures in either division.

The tournament’s Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $380 went to Dave Mitchell, 49, of Lake Havasu for a 5-pound, 9-ounce bass. In the Co-Angler Division, Andy Boucek, 34, of La Mesa, Calif., collected $190 from Abu Garcia for a 4-pound bass.

Bowen wins Red Man bass tournament on Lake Okeechobee

OKEECHOBEE, Fla., (Feb. 14, 2000) – Billy Bowen of Ocala, Fla., out fished the competition Saturday to earn $5,906 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points in the Boater Division of the second Red Man Tournament Trail event of 2000 on Lake Okeechobee.

Bowen caught five largemouth bass weighing 26 pounds, 7 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Robert Beatty of Clermont, Fla., who finished with a five-bass catch of 20-12 worth $2,953. Bowen was flipping a white jig into grass to catch his limit.

Jim Williams of Winter Springs, Fla., placed third and collected $1,476 for five bass weighing 19-0. Mike Gouge of Okeechobee, Fla., who earned $1,280 for five bass weighing 18-14, and Eric Bozeman of Bloomingdale, Ga., who received $1,181 for five bass weighing 18-13, followed in fourth and fifth place respectively.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,922 went to Jim Pemberton of Pompano Beach, Fla., for five bass weighing 17-8. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,461 went to Kirk Samples of Naples, Fla., for five bass weighing 15-11, while Tom Hamilton of Sarasota, Fla., took third place and $731 with five bass weighing 14-10.

The tournament’s Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $970 went to Jim Williams of Winter Springs, Fla., for an 8-pound, 8-ounce largemouth he caught on a Fire Tiger lure. In the Co-Angler Division, Joe Pinkston of Lakeland, Fla., collected $480 from Abu Garcia for a 5-pound, 10-ounce largemouth.
