From time to time, FLW checks in with its anglers to find out what they’ve been up to, what they’re listening to, who they’re following and where they’re heading while out on the tournament trail. This week, we caught up with Matt Becker.
What are you up to lately?
After Christmas I hitched up the Phoenix and headed down to Florida for a little vacation. So I got some fishing in down at Okeechobee, and now I’m getting my boat wrapped and ready for the 2020 season. It worked out good to go to Florida. The weather was good, and I got away from the cold. And it helps to gain confidence and learn a little more about Florida fishing.
Where are you headed next?
Once I leave the wrap shop I’m headed home for a few days. Then I’ll probably head to Texas a few days early and fish somewhere before the Pro Circuit season starts at Rayburn. Because it’s coming up soon in just a couple weeks.
What’s your favorite part of the offseason?
I love tinkering with tackle. I’m super organized, so I love that part of it. I love looking at what I need, changing hooks and that kind of thing. I spend countless hours doing that and making everything organized.
What are you listening to these days?
I listen to the FLW Bass Fishing Podcast, of course, and a lot of other bass fishing podcasts, like Bass Talk Live and Luke Dunkin’s show. That really helps to pass the time. Other than that, it’s a mix between a little bit of everything on the radio, but probably country the most.
What are you following or watching right now?
I don’t have cable. I’m not home enough to justify that, so it’s pretty much all fishing in my life. I certainly enjoy following hockey, but it’s been hard this year without TV. Pretty much all my TV watching is YouTube, and I watch everything about fishing I can.
What bait or technique are you trying to master right now?
Deep cranking is something I don’t have a lot of experience with. I want to really learn how to master that. It’s something I’ve never done a whole lot of. That’s one of my goals for 2020, for sure.
