James Watson has little more than a 5-pound lead over Ben Verhoef in 10th place, and he may need all of it.

The final day of the Costa FLW Series Central Division on Lake of the Ozarks presented by Evinrude is fixing to get fun based on what’s already happened today and what could happen.

First, we’ll rundown what happened this morning.

We hung with Watson until 9 a.m., and by the time the on-the-water crew left he had the same number of fish in his livewell as he took off with – zero – having landed only one nonkeeper on a buzzbait. He continued to work docks with either his Tackle HD buzzbait or flipping.

In fact, that was pretty much par for the course all morning, as Casey Smith and James Dill also didn’t have any fish as late as 10:30 a.m. (though Dill did lose a decent one on a buzzbait while we watched). The lone pro we heard of with even a single keeper was Dylan Hays, with one 3-pounder.

And then we caught word of Verhoef and the significant bag he was attempting to put together. Fishing up closer to the dam, the young pro had found 5-, 4- and 2-pounders that all wanted to eat a worm he was pitching to shallow docks.

We saw him just before getting off the water, and he was actually just about to switch tactics, figuring the sun and warm weather – it was a beautiful 60 degrees out just before noon – would get his offshore fish to group up like they did in practice.

Hays also mentioned just before we got off that he figured the fishing was just about to pick up, and Watson was on the same train of thought that the afternoon would be when many pros would start really catching fish, be it on docks or offshore.

Will the afternoon bite turn on again for the third day? Or will Watson and a number of other pros’ dock bites completely fizzle with the high pressure? And what about the guys like Dale Andrews and Lance Williams, who both made runs far up the river?

Plenty to unfold come weigh-in at 3 p.m. CT today.
