Adding 16 pounds, 6 ounces on Day 2, Bobby Lane maintained his lead with a total of 36-14 halfway through the Tackle Warehouse Pro Circuit Presented by Bad Boy Mowers event on Lake Eufaula. Fishing up in the Chattahoochee River, Lane is hammering out his weights shallow as he is wont to do.

Lane’s river arsenal of spinnerbaits, swim jigs and flipping sticks produced far more keepers on Day 2. He estimates he caught between 20 to 30 keepers on the day. He has also discovered that the shad are indeed spawning in certain sections of the river, providing a red-hot morning bite.

“Yesterday I started down the lake on what I thought was a good shad spawn,” he says. “Today I ran up the river first thing and found the shad to be a lot more active up there.”

Lane caught a near 6-pounder early to get his day started right.

“That big one eased my mind,” he says. “Fish like that make the rest of the day go so much better.”

That relaxed mind helped the Berkley pro make good strategic decisions when boat traffic and fishing pressure became an issue.

“There are a lot of boats fishing up there; everything is getting beat on,” he says. “Once everyone gets to running and gunning around by mid-morning, it really starts to muddy up the banks and I think it shuts the fish off for a while. That’s when I pick up the flipping stick and go to work in more protected places. There will be less boats on the water tomorrow, so that should help.”

Lane also believes the river water level did not fall as hard overnight has it did previous nights, which might be helping his cause as well.

“The river looks like it has stabilized,” Lane adds. “I’m hoping for a warmer night tonight to make those shad active again in the morning.”
