Former FLW College Fishing angler Jared Spickelmier of Boise, Idaho, died November 4, according to a source close to the deceased.

Nick Barr, a fellow collegiate angler who knew Spickelmier, said details of his death hadn’t been made known yet. A contact in the Ada County Coroner’s Office in Boise confirmed that the cause of death hadn’t been determined as of Wednesday evening.

Spickelmier, who was a founding member of the Boise State University Fishing Team, was a well-known figure in fishing circles of the Pacific Northwest. A former Marine who attended Boise State after his service, Spickelmier was actively involved in military bass fishing tournaments as well as FLW College Fishing where he qualified for the Western Conference Championship in 2010 and 2011.

“Jared was one of the first people I met when I got into collegiate fishing. He was outgoing and always ready to be a friend and mentor,” remembers Barr. “He was well-known and very well-liked – the kind of angler who really cared about the sport and other fishermen more than he cared about himself. Remembering how he was, we’re going to rally around his family and help them through this. I don’t know if we’re going to set up some sort of fund or what at this point, but we’re definitely going to do something.”
