January 3, 2025 • MLF • High School Fishing

In 2025, a suite of new forward-facing sonar rules will go into effect across MLF’s tournament circuits. Here are some of the frequently asked questions specific to Abu Garcia High School Fishing.

What is the forward-facing sonar rule change for the 2025 Abu Garcia High School Fishing circuit?

Forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers are not allowed in the 2025 Abu Garcia High School Fishing circuit. Forward-facing transducers are defined as any transducers that provide live (real-time) images. Three hundred- and sixty-degree (360) transducers are defined as any transducers that produce a beam that rotates 360 degrees.

  • Abu Garcia High School Fishing anglers are allowed to use forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers during PRACTICE ONLY – NOT DURING COMPETITION.
  • Any Abu Garcia High School Fishing anglers who have forward-facing and 360-degree sonar transducers on their boat must disconnect the transducers, and the cable plugs must be covered and locked with a free, high-visibility lock box provided by MLF throughout the ENTIRETY OF COMPETITION.

Why is this rule change being implemented?

To create a more level playing field for up-and-coming student anglers and reinforce the learning of traditional bass-fishing techniques.

When does the new rule go into effect?

Jan. 1, 2025.

Are there any exceptions to the rule for specific tournaments or circumstances?

The rule applies universally to all Abu Garcia High School Fishing regular-season events. Exceptions are not permitted, as the rule is designed to maintain consistency and fairness across all competitions.

Does the 2025 forward-facing sonar rule apply to the High School National Championship?

No, the High School National Championship is held in conjunction with The Bass Federation (TBF) and will go by the TBF forward-facing sonar rules, which have no limitations on forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers.

Does the 2025 forward-facing sonar rule apply to High School Fishing sanctioned events such as KHSAA, GHSA, LHSAA, IHSAA?

No, there are no limitations on forward-facing or 360-degree sonar transducers in the above-mentioned sanctioned events.

What is the lock box, and how does it work?

The lock box is a device designed and engineered by Precision Sonar to enforce MLF’s new forward-facing sonar rules. It disables the use of transducers once disconnected by locking and securing the cable plugs with a high-visibility lock box. This ensures compliance with the rule while maintaining fairness during tournaments.

Who is required to use the lock box during Abu Garcia High School Fishing tournaments?

Any Abu Garcia High School Fishing competitor who has forward-facing and/or 360-degree sonar transducers installed on their boat is required to use the lock box during competition to disable the transducers.

How does it impact anglers and Abu Garcia High School Fishing events?

Abu Garcia High School Fishing anglers will be allowed to use forward-facing sonar and 360-degree sonar transducers during PRACTICE ONLY and will NOT BE ALLOWED to use forward-facing sonar and 360-degree sonar transducers during competition.

Anglers will be required to:

  • Disclose their setup and need for the device to the Tournament Director during check-in at the MLF Tournament Trailer the morning of the event.
  • Follow Tournament Director’s pre-tournament instructions to obtain a lock box from MLF staff prior and install the device prior to boat launch – a quick and straightforward process that ensures transducers are disconnected and cable plugs are securely capped with a high-visibility lock box.
  • Make a quick stop by the Precision Sonar Lock Station after use at the end of the event to have the device unlocked and returned to MLF staff.

How do I disclose my setup and obtain the lock box from the tournament director?

During check-in, competitors must inform the tournament director if their boat is equipped with forward-facing and/or 360-degree transducers.

The tournament director will provide instructions on where to obtain the lock box, along with instructions for installation.

Where do we get the lock box?

Abu Garcia High School Fishing anglers will be able to obtain a lock box during check-in at the MLF Tournament Trailer the morning of the event prior to launch. The device is self-locking, and anglers are responsible for installing the lock box PRIOR to going through boat check at each tournament.

What is the installation process for the lock box, and how long does it take?

Installing the lock box is a quick and simple process. Competitors will disconnect the transducers and secure the cable plugs using the self-locking lock box provided. The installation typically takes just a few seconds and can be easily completed before the tournament begins and prior to going through boat check.

How do I have the lock box removed after competition ends?

Anglers must stop at the Precision Sonar Lock Station following check-in to have their lock box quickly removed by an MLF official.
