The red-hot shad spawn bite that fueled the big catches on day one of the Toyota Series Central Division event on Pickwick has fizzled this morning. Whether it was the lack of cloud cover compared to yesterday’s low ceilings or a change in current, the shad spawn that Buddy Gross used to take the day one lead provided just one keeper this morning and left him scrambling for better water.

Justin Atkins posted three keepers pretty quickly but was also starting to hunt and peck for better quality fish. Throughout the morning, the bite on Pickwick was extremely stingy. A lot fewer fish were being caught in general. Sunny skies and dead slick water seemed to have slowed things considerably.

Jason Lambert was hauling around a 12-pound limit looking for cull ups. Brent Anderson had ground up four bass for about 12 to 13 pounds and was looking for number five. Cameron Gautney had three bass aboard his boat, but had been stymied by a thrown ear on his prop, which limited his ability to run around.

Those making strides to stay in the top 10 today included Michael Brewer, whose limit included a five pounder. Also, Seth Davis was putting together a decent day. Jacob Wheeler seemed to have the hottest hand by noon as he was knocking on the door of a 20-pound bag.

Weigh-in is sure to be a good one, and it’s very likely that someone will find the motherlode in the afternoon. To watch it live, be sure to tune in at 2 p.m. CT.
