ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Martin March 5 for the first of five stops in the Bama Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $95000 and $3,000, respectively.

“The recent warming trend has moved fish into prespawn mode,” said National Guard pro Jonathan Newton of Rogersville, Ala. “It is going to be a lot of fun fishing this tournament. I would go after the spotted bass prespawn bite with a jerkbait.

“There are some largemouth bass out there that are waiting to be caught too. They are a little more risky to catch, but in the end it could be the largemouth that wins the tournament. The dilemma is choosing between targeting the spotted bass in clear water or going after the largemouth in dirty water. If anglers do decide to target the largemouth, they are going to have to commit to them all day. I think it will take about 20 pounds to win this thing.”

Takeoffs and weigh-ins will be at Wind Creek State Park located at 4325 Alabama Highway 128 in Alexander City, Ala. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
