Unlike many recreational activities, fishing and boating can still be done in a responsible manner during the COVID-19 pandemic as long as participants follow social distancing guidelines as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control to help slow the spread of the virus. 

However, in some parts of the country, the pandemic has forced new restrictions that govern access to boat launches, recreational sites, public lands and waters, and associated facilities. The changes have come quickly, and the entire situation has been made only more confusing by the endless swirl of news reports and social media chatter.

Thankfully, the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF) recently launched a new tool for keeping everyone up to speed with accurate, timely information. The State Agency COVID-19 Updates page is available on RBFF’s website as well as websites managed by partner organizations such as FLW, which added the service as a plugin at FLWFishing.com on Monday, April 13. 

The State Agency COVID-19 Updates page is a hub for state-by-state fishing and boating information. It connects users to each state’s fish and wildlife service or department of natural resources website – or any website specific to COVID-19 information – where fishing and boating updates are posted. Users can choose any state and easily toggle between fishing and boating links. RBFF will update the information regularly to ensure links are live and accurate.

Boaters and anglers should make the page a regular stop before planning an outing. To access the plugin on the FLW website, hover over the “More” tab at the top of the home page and click on “STATE COVID-19 UPDATES.” The image below shows where to find it if you’re having trouble.

RBFF also shared a few reminders for anyone planning on fishing or boating:

  • Check both state and local town/city regulations.
  • Keep a 6-foot social distance between yourself and others.
  • Do not touch public services, such as benches or water fountains.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after fishing and after touching any public services.
  • Stay home if you are sick or have any symptoms of COVID-19.
