“Take A Kid Fishing” day offers fishing tips, activities and prizes for youth nationwide

On Saturday, June 2, kids across the country will have the opportunity to learn how to cast for bass like the Wal-Mart FLW Tour pro anglers. To kick off National Fishing Week, participating Wal-Mart stores nationwide are hosting “Take A Kid Fishing” day, where kids and their families can partake in all kinds of fishing-related activities, including games, instruction, “goody bags” and scavenger hunts.

More than 2,600 Wal-Mart stores will host the event, which, according to Wal-Mart senior vice president Doug McMillon, “is designed to help parents create a fun and engaging outing for the whole family. It will also help excite children’s interest in fishing.”

Scheduled activities include an introduction-to-fishing tutorial by a local fish-and-game representative that will provide information about licensing, permits, catch-and-release and other basics; a storewide scavenger hunt where kids will receive a complimentary “goody bag” of fishing accessories and treats; a distance-casting competition; a casting-accuracy competition; a reeling race-off; and a weigh-in where participants will receive a certificate of recognition.

“It’s pretty dynamic and it’s going to be focused on many interactive activities,” said Christine Creed, vice president of marketing for Operation Bass. “Think of it as being a miniature Family Fun Zone. It will be a terrific way to learn about fishing.”
