South DakotaWal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit, May 1-4

When the Wal-Mart RCL Walleye Circuit visits Lake Sharpe in South Dakota May 1-4, anglers can expect to find a typical springtime bite as long as the weather remains stable. A combination of jigging and pulling plugs tends to produce the most fish in early May.

“There are no real secret approaches when you head out to fish Lake Sharpe in early May,” says Sean Brakss at Spring Creek Resort. “Walleye really start to get active at this time and anglers will take them with a variety of traditional fishing approaches.”

One of the most common methods for taking walleye on Lake Sharpe is fishing with a jig and minnow or half a night crawler. If the walleye are very aggressive, jig anglers will remove the bait and work a jig and a white, chartreuse or pearl twister tail and actively hop the jig close to the bottom. “I think that fishing with a jig will put a limit in the boat when other techniques fail,” Brakss says. “A jig and twister is a real good lure for taking active fish and a jig and minnow or crawler will take less aggressive walleye.”

Favorite areas for anglers to jig include the tailrace below the dam, the Bluffs and the West Bank above the lake’s train bridge.

“Besides jigging, the other highly productive and popular method for hooking walleye in May is to pull plugs,” Brakss says. “Anglers trolling lures like Wally Divers or Shad Raps near Fort George or an area called the Tin Shack really produce some nice fish in May.”
