TITUSVILLE, Fla. – Competitive redfishing is supposed to be a team event: two anglers working together as a team to beat other teams. But in the world of competitive fishing, the wagering never ends.
As day two of the Wal-Mart FLW Redfish Series Eastern event began in Titusville Saturday morning, the team of Warren Girle of Longboat Key, Fla., and Billy Harris of Bradenton, Fla., were busy digging into their wallets ponying up more money for their own side pot between themselves.
Apparently, the potential of winning $50,000 (Girle and Harris are currently third in the event) is not quite enough for these guys.
The wager? Both Girle and Harris each put three dollars into the pot.
“That’s one for the first fish, one for the biggest fish and one for the most fish,” said Girle, as he handed George Schaafsma, professional cameraman and expedient onboard bookie, his $3. “George will hold the money until this afternoon. I just want to keep everyone here honest.”
“OK, if you want to waste your money like that, that’s fine with me,” responded Harris confidently, as he forked over his three bucks.
“It’s just a little extra incentive to keep everyone in the boat on their toes today,” said Girle with a smile.
The final-day weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. at Sand Point Park in Titusville.
