PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With the safety of the anglers being their utmost concern Friday, the FLW Outdoors tournament staff made the decision to cancel day three of Wal-Mart FLW Series competition on Lake Champlain.

Late Thursday afternoon a strong south wind seized Lake Champlain, making its waters dangerous for small-craft travel. Unfortunately, the blustery weather only continued to increase in strength over the next 15 hours. According to the latest reports from the National Weather Service in Burlington, Vt., sustained southerly winds of 25 mph were already present in the area. Furthermore, forecasts predict sustained winds of 30 mph with gusts of up to 35 mph. With just a 20 mph wind yesterday, anglers encountered waves of up to 7 feet in height.

FLW Series Tournament Director Chris Jones notified the field at approximately 8:30 a.m.

“Priority No. 1 is health and safety, hands down,” Jones said. “We all want to come home to friends and family safe. After careful consideration, we are canceling day three. I know some of you are supportive of the decision and some of you are against it. It comes down to the need of maintaining safety at all times.”

With no weigh-in Friday, the leaderboard from day two for both the pros and co-anglers remained unchanged. That means pro Danny Correia will lead the charge Saturday with a two-day total of 10 bass weighing 37 pounds, 7 ounces. Likewise, the cancellation was an abrupt ending to the co-angler competition, as Louisiana native Charles Dubroc claimed the title with 32 pounds, 6 ounces.

As a result of the day’s cancellation, Friday’s FLW Live video feed has also been postponed until Saturday.

Weather cooperating, day four of BP Eastern Division competition on Lake Champlain begins as the top 10 pros take off from the Dock Street Landing in Plattsburgh at 6:30 a.m. Eastern time. The pro winner is determined by the heaviest accumulated weight from all three days.
