Compared to yesterday, the 112 pros fishing the Rayovac FLW Series Texas Division event presented by Frabill on Lake Amistad are in much better moods. A blanket of cloud cover burned off by about 9 a.m., and now the sun is shining over calm waters. It’s a drastic change from yesterday’s rain and gales.
Fishing has started to pick up too. Most of the 18 or 20 pros that FLW’s on-the-water team visited with were catching fish. There should be more limits at weigh-in today. The co-anglers were getting in on the action too, so expect to see some shakeups in that division once the scale closes.
No real giants were reported this morning, not even from day-one leader Denny Brauer, who had a few small bass in the box at 11:15. Perhaps fish are in a bit of a post-front funk. Or, as Brauer and a few other anglers predict, the bite will heat up this afternoon as the sun continues to beat down and warm the water. Before the tournament began, several local anglers in the field did say that sunshine is a key for getting these fish to move up where anglers can intercept them.
Aside from possibly repositioning the fish, the biggest benefit of the weather change today is that anglers can fish their offshore holes more easily. One main-lake grass flat was dotted with about a dozen boats, while shallower shoreline grass beds and flooded brush within eyesight held about a dozen more. That main-lake area was the busiest on the lake and just a few minutes from takeoff.
A lot could change today, especially this afternoon. Everyone knows it. Most of the pros have said as much. And one way or another, what happens in the next few hours will determine who goes fishing tomorrow. Check back with FLW at 3:30 p.m. CT to watch the weigh-in live.
