The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) recently denied Rodney Ply’s submission of a world record striped bass. Ply, a native of Diamond City, Ark., caught a 68-pound striped bass in February on Bull Shoals Lake.

This issue isn’t the weight of the fish, it’s the bait. Ply used a homemade umbrella rig for his monster catch and the IGFA had never before considered a record landed on such a presentation. The IGFA ultimately determined the presentation violated its equipment rules for spreader bars.

Ply plans to appeal in part because he registered for Mustad Hooks “Hook-a-Million” contest, where a state record catch is worth $100,000 and a world-record catch is worth $1,000,000.
