GILBERTSVILLE, Ky. – Phillip Robinson of Ashland, Ky., topped 70 competitors on Kentucky Lake this weekend with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 3 ounces to win $5,181 and 400 points on the boater side of the Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League (BFL) LBL Division season finale.

After qualifying for the final round of the two-day Super Tournament in third place with an opening day catch of five bass weighing 16 pounds, 7 ounces, Robinson out fished runner up Bill Schroeder of Paducah, Ky., by 1 pound, 13 ounces to take the win. Robinson caught his limits using a green-pumpkin jig around boat docks and stake beds in the north ends of Kentucky and Barkley lakes.

Schroeder qualified for the final round in fifth place with five bass weighing 16 pounds, 6 ounces and finished up with a 14-pound, 6-ounce catch to win $2,590.

Shawn Penn of Benton, Ky., took third place and collected $1,295 with 12 pounds, 12 ounces. Ray Barga of Gilbertsville placed fourth and earned $1,123 with 12 pounds, 3 ounces, while Ronnie Grant of Columbia, Ky., placed fifth and earned $1,036 with 11 pounds, 14 ounces. Barga also won $500 as the highest finishing participant in the Ranger Cup incentive program.

Greg Kiser of Star City, Ind., won the boater Big Bass Award and collected $700 with a 5-pound, 15-ounce bass that he caught on a Berkley Powerworm near Moors Marina.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,627 went to Nick Chaney of Reed, Ky., who topped 70 competitors with a final round catch of three bass weighing 7 pounds, 10 ounces. Second place in the division and $1,314 went to Gerald Williams of Scottsville, Ky., with 7 pounds, 5 ounces, while Chip Rush of Springfield, Tenn., took third place and $657 with 5 pounds, 4 ounces.

Scott Adams of Murray, Ky., won the co-angler Big Bass Award of $355 with a 4-pound, 15-ounce bass that he caught on a white 3/8-ounce spinnerbait while fishing flats in the north end of Kentucky Lake.

Penn landed the Divisional Points Championship and $1,000 with 1176 points won during five regular season tournaments. Kenneth Bucy of Murray landed the Co-Angler Points Championship and $500 with 1109 points.

The top 30 boaters and top 30 co-anglers in the LBL Division will advance to regional competition Oct. 16-20 on the Ohio River near Paducah, Ky., where they will go up against top competitors from the Plains, Hoosier and Great Lakes divisions for a shot at qualifying for the BFL All-American, which features an estimated purse of $345,000 and ranks as one of the most lucrative post-season tournaments in competitive angling. The top two boaters and co-anglers may also qualify for the Ranger M1 tournament in Mobile, Ala., Feb. 27-March 2, 2002, where they can win up to $1 million in the world’s richest freshwater tournament.

Awards for the 2001 BFL season could reach $5.7 million based on full fields at each tournament.
