MINNEAPOLIS – After careful consideration, FLW Outdoors has announced that the 2004 FLW Tour Championship will no longer be held July 28-31, as previously reported, and will be rescheduled so as to not overlap with the Bassmaster Classic.
FLW Outdoors Chairman, Irwin Jacobs, said that it was never the intention of FLW Outdoors to schedule the FLW Tour Championship on the same dates as the Classic.
“Never, at any time, did I even dream of the fact that (the FLW Championship) would be in direct conflict with the Bassmaster Classic,” he said. “This change is being made for the FLW constituency, the anglers, their fans, sponsors and exhibitors. Making them choose between two high-profile events was never our intention and is certainly not good for the sport of fishing.”
At this point, no date for the 2004 FLW Tour Championship has been set. The championship date was originally moved last week so that the families and fans of the FLW Tour anglers could attend while schools are out on summer vacation. FLW Outdoors officials said that the dates of July 28-31 were selected because it was “the only one that met all the requirements for an event of this magnitude.”
FLW Outdoors is currently working with officials from Alabama, the city of Birmingham and the Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau to reschedule.
