FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – The Wal-Mart FLW Redfish Series Eastern Division will make its fourth $170,000 regular-season stop Sept. 4-6 in Fernandina Beach, Fla. The lucrative tournament will feature as many as 125 redfish teams casting for a top award of $50,000.
“I hope it will be similar to last year-it usually has been for the last 5 or 6 years,” said pro Daniel Benson of Brandon, Fla., who won the 2007 Redfish Series Eastern Division tournament in Fernandina Beach. “With it being so hot this year, I’m going to be throwing at least 6- to 9-foot deep diving crankbaits in some of the deeper bends of the creek channels.”
Benson expects the fish to stay in deeper water because of the intense heat, and said a lot of the fish will come out of the Clapboard Creek area.
Anglers will take off at 7 Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings from Fernandina Harbor Marina located at 1 Front St. in Fernandina Beach. Weigh-ins will also be held at Fernandina Harbor Marina beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free, and the community is invited to attend the festivities.
The Fernandina Beach FLW Redfish Series event is hosted by the Chamber of Commerce – Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach and Yulee.
The top award of $50,000 includes $20,000 cash plus a $15,000 cash bonus from Ranger Boats and a $15,000 cash bonus from Yamaha or Evinrude if contingency guidelines are met.
