SENECA, S.C. – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to Lake Keowee Feb. 27 for the first of five stops in the Savannah River Division series. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“If the fish are biting, Lake Keowee is a fun lake to fish,” said Chevy pro Anthony Gagliardi of Prosperity, S.C. “Lake Keowee is extremely clear, which can make it tough to catch fish, but there are a lot of spotted (bass) in there, and it has a decent population of largemouths as well. Drop-shotting jigs just about anywhere on the lake should work well for the anglers. And as crazy as it sounds, anglers should keep their eyes open for schooling fish. I have actually caught a couple of schooling fish this time of year, and anglers might actually get a big spot as a bonus.”

Lake Keowee is divided into two sections: upper and lower. The upper lake has significantly warmer water temperatures due to runoff from the power plant. The lower lake will be significantly cooler, so if anglers are looking for any particular water temperature, they will find it on Lake Keowee. Gagliardi added that some of the bigger fish might actually be found in the colder water; however, they will be harder to find. Anglers should fish their strengths in order to be successful on this lake.

Anglers will take off from South Cove County Park located at 1099 S. Cove Road in Seneca, S.C., at 7 a.m. Weigh-in will be held at the South Cove Marina beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Bass Fishing League is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
