LOUISVILLE, Ky. – FLW Outdoors announced that it has formed a partnership with the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) and will sponsor the NASP National Tournament held in Louisville, Ky., May 7-8, 2010. NASP is an international target archery program designed to teach the lifetime skill of archery to fourth-grade through 12th-grade students in physical education classes.

“Archery is a gateway activity, and as many as 56 percent of the archers will also participate in fishing,” said FLW Outdoors Programs Manager Dave Simmons. “With the expansion of FLW Outdoors into the full spectrum of outdoor pursuits, we have a tremendous amount of opportunities to offer these championship archers and families. We are looking forward to many cooperative activities and projects with NASP.”

NASP President Roy Grimes said: “This initiative by FLW Outdoors shows the vision of its founders and leadership in the areas of youth education and conservation. NASP teaches the lifetime skill of archery to more than 1.5 million students in 7,000 schools in the United States and Canada.

“NASP teaches students to focus, concentrate and practice. These are not only skills for archers, but anglers as well, and in many cases the techniques provide meaningful changes in study habits. Teachers report that the skills taught in archery class carry over into the classroom.”

A 2009 survey by the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association reports that archers cross over and learn other outdoor skills such as shooting, hunting and fishing at impressive rates.

With this partnership, FLW Outdoors will work with NASP to host events and competitions in conjunction with tournaments and additional outdoor events. In addition, the relationship will continue to encourage youth and participation in outdoor activities through education, conservation, awareness, competitive events and more.
