TRENTON, Mich. – The FLW Bass Fishing League is headed to the Detroit River Aug. 28 for the fourth of five stops in the Michigan Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $8,000 and $3,000, respectively.

“The weather is really going to play a role in this tournament,” said FLW Tour pro Nate Wellman of Jenison, Mich., who has three top-10 finishes on the Detroit River/Lake St. Clair. “If the weather starts to cool off and we get consistent cool nights in the 50s to 60s, the fish will start migrating and the mouth of the river will really turn on. Typically the fish will start their migration the end of August to early September.

“Anglers can catch fish in Lake St. Clair using tubes and drop-shots or go deep in Lake Erie, drop-shotting a worm. There are some big, fat toads waiting to be caught, and they are awesome!”

Depending on the weather, Wellman believes that it will take between 21 to 24 pounds to win this tournament.

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Elizabeth Park Marina located at 200 Grosse Ile Parkway in Trenton, Mich. Takeoff is scheduled for 6 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

The Detroit River BFL tournament is being hosted by Wayne County Parks.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers that offers even bigger prizes to qualifiers of the regional championship and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the American Fishing Series or even the FLW Tour.
