ROOSEVELT, Ariz. – The University of Oregon team of Ross Richards and Reed Frazier won the National Guard FLW College Fishing Western Division event on Lake Roosevelt Saturday with five bass weighing 12 pounds. The victory earned the team $10,000 to be split between the university and the university’s bass fishing club – $7,500 for the bass club and $2,500 for their school. The win also helped them advance to the Western Division Regional Championship for the third straight year.

“We got the bites we needed and they were big ones,” said Frazier, a senior Spanish major. “The competition is really stiff and to beat Joey (Jarrell, Arizona State University) on his home lake is pretty awesome. We have gotten two top-5 finishes in the past and to finally finish first is a dream come true.”

Coming in second at Lake Roosevelt was the Arizona State University team of Joseph Jarrell and Kyle Keegan with five bass, 9-13, $3,000.

“We fished shallow, about 12 feet, all day,” Richards a junior in business administration went on to say. “We were in pretty much the same area using a drop-shot and we just kept blowing out hawgs right and left. It was an incredible day and I am so excited.”

Rounding out the top five teams and also advancing to the Western Regional Championship are:

2nd: Arizona State University – Joseph Jarrell and Kyle Keegan, (five bass, 9-13, $3,000)

3rd: California Polytechnic – Scott Hellesen and Damian Bean, (five bass, 9-5, $2,000)

4th: California State University, Monterey Bay – David Hamblin and Matthew Diaz, (five bass, 8-13, $2,000)

5th: Northern Arizona University – Nicole Albright and Brent Perkins, (five bass, 8-12, $2,000)

The top five teams from each tournament qualify for the regional championship where the first-place team will win $12,500 cash for their school and $12,500 cash and a Ranger 177TR bass boat with a 90 horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard wrapped in school colors for their fishing club. The top five teams from each regional tournament advance to the national championship where the first-place team will win $25,000 for their school and $50,000 cash and a Ranger 177TR bass boat with a 90-horsepower Evinrude or Mercury outboard wrapped in school colors for their fishing club.

College Fishing is free to enter and FLW Outdoors provides boats and drivers for each competing team along with travel allowances. All participants must be registered, full-time undergraduate students at a four-year college or university and members of a fishing club recognized by their college or university.
