Kerr Lake to host North Carolina Division

Early-morning shad spawn could help anglers get lucky

HENDERSON, N.C. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Kerr Lake May 7 for the third of five stops in the North Carolina Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.

“Stay shallow and around bushes,” said Duracell/Gillette pro Jacob Powroznik of Prince George, Va. “The fish are going to be trying to spawn, so I would use topwater baits or try flipping.

“The key to winning this tournament is going to be landing that 5-pounder,” Powroznik added. “There aren’t a lot of big fish left in the lake, but there are some there and the guy that gets lucky and lands it will win. I think it is going to take about 15 or 16 pounds to win.

“Kerr Lake is known for its shad spawn,” Powroznik went on to say. “First thing in the morning anglers should watch for it, and they may get lucky and get those two big bites on one bank within the first 30 to 45 minutes of the day.”

Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Satterwhite Point Marina located at 6254 Satterwhite Point Road in Henderson. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.

Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
