Mountain Division anglers to fish Laurel Lake
Lake offers wide variety of smallmouth, largemouth, spotted bass
LONDON, Ky. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to Laurel Lake May 7 for the third of five stops in the Mountain Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“The fishing ought to be real good,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Keith Monson of Burgin, Ky. “The smallmouth should really be biting next week and will definitely come into play for this tournament. There is a two-smallmouth limit, and anglers better make them good ones, 4- to 5-pounders, in order to win. It is going to take 20 pounds to win.
“The largemouth are going to be spawning,” Monson went on to say. “It should be a bed-fisherman’s dream. I would stick to the banks and look for beds for this tournament. We have had a lot of rain so the water might be a little muddy, which could hinder the sight-fishing. If anglers are sight-fishing, spinnerbaits and crankbaits will work best. If the water is muddy, I would use a jig and Brush Hogs.”
Takeoff is at Holly Bay Marina & Resort located at 674 Highway 1193 in London and is scheduled for 7 a.m. Weigh-in will be at Spillway Beach located on Highway 1193 and Laurel Lake Dam in London beginning at 3 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the EverStart Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
