BRISTOL, Tenn. – The Walmart Bass Fishing League is headed to South Holston Reservoir May 7 for the third of five stops in the Volunteer Division. As many as 400 boaters and co-anglers will compete for top awards of up to $9,500 and $3,000, respectively.
“The lake is full of smallmouth bass on beds right now,” said Walmart FLW Tour pro Craig Powers of Rockwood, Tenn. “There will be an absolute ton of bass caught.
“May means topwater. Fish shallow and hope you get lucky,” Powers went on to say. “Shaky heads, Senkos, Pop-Rs, swimbaits, wacky worms will all produce well. Whoever can catch two 5-pound smallmouth off the beds is probably going to be the one that wins this thing. It is going to take 20 pounds to do that.”
Powers indicated that the normally clear water has been muddied up due to the recent storms that have passed through the area. Anglers can expect to see a lot of color in the water for next week’s tournament.
Takeoff and weigh-in will be at Observation Knob Park located at 553 Knob Park Road in Bristol. Takeoff is scheduled for 6:30 a.m. while weigh-in will begin at 2:30 p.m. Takeoffs and weigh-ins are free and open to the public.
The South Holston Reservoir BFL tournament is being hosted by the Bristol Tennessee Virginia Chamber of Commerce.
Bass Fishing League competition is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers offering bigger prizes to those who qualify for the regional championships and those who make it to one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the BFL All-American presented by Chevy.
