The 2014 Walmart BFL season continues with two tournaments on Saturday, March 15. The Mountain Division will head to Dale Hollow Lake and the Savannah River Division will fish Lake Hartwell. Up to 400 boaters and co-anglers will be competing in each event for top awards up to $8,000 and $3,000 respectively.

When: Saturday, March 15

Where: Mountain Division

Dale Hollow Lake

Star Point Resort

Byrdstown, Tenn.

Notes: The bass fishing on Dale Hollow should be good. Largemouth and smallmouth will both come to the scales on a fishery that is famous for smallmouth. The bass will likely be in a prespawn pattern and there’s a good chance that some giant smallmouth come to the scales. Popular baits will be umbrella rigs, jerkbaits, crankbaits and jigs. The winner is expected to bring in a five-bass limit weighing about 20 pounds.

Where: Savannah River Division

Lake Hartwell

Tugaloo State Park

Lavonia, Ga.

Notes: The best indicator of the bass fishing on Hartwell might well be the FLW Tour event taking place the weekend before the BFL. With warmer weather, the fishing on Hartwell should be good. The water is higher than in years past and the shallow water largemouth bite could be a strong player. Nonetheless, some anglers will likely elect to pursue the lake’s plentiful and fat spotted bass. Drop-shot rigs, jigs, swimjigs, spinnerbaits and squarebill crankbaits are all likely to be successful. The winner is expected to bring about 20 pounds of Hartwell bass to the scales.

Walmart BFL overview

The BFL is a 24-division circuit devoted to weekend anglers, with 120 tournaments throughout the season, five in each division. The top 40 boaters and co-anglers from each division qualify for a regional tournament and are competing to finish in the top six, which then qualifies them for one of the longest-running championships in all of competitive bass fishing – the Walmart BFL All-American presented by Chevy. The 2014 BFL All-American is being held June 5-7 on Wilson Lake in Florence, Ala. Top winners in the BFL can move up to the Rayovac FLW Series or even the Walmart FLW Tour.
