MINNEAPOLIS – Cody Marshall of Gainesville, Georgia, accumulated the most points of any Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) Fantasy Fishing player worldwide to win $5,000 after last week’s Forrest Wood Cup championship on Lake Murray in Columbia, South Carolina. Marshall won the game by choosing a team of anglers and earning points based on their performance in the world championship fishing tournament.

“I was surprised when I checked the standings after the event,” said Marshall, who competed on the FLW Tour as a co-angler in 2015. “I knew after the first day that I had seven people in the top 10, but then it dropped to six after Day Two. I was actually in Columbia for the Cup, but was busy walking around the Expo and talking with people – I wasn’t paying attention to the game.

Marshall said he relied on a core group of top FLW performers to carry his team.

“Brandon Cobb, Scott Canterbury and Bryan Thrift were automatic picks,” said Marshall. “Cobb has multiple top-10 finishes at the Cup, Canterbury understands clear-water blueback-herring lakes well and Thrift seems to be a local wherever he goes – he knows everything. Anthony Gagliardi was also a guaranteed pick. It’s Lake Murray – if you didn’t pick Gagliardi, there’s something wrong there.”

Though Marshall chose Cobb to win it all, he had a good feeling about eventual champion Justin Atkins.

“I put Atkins in my lineup because he had a heck of a rookie year,” said Marshall.

Finishing in second place was William Simpson of Palmyra, Tennessee, who took home $1,000, and in third place was Brandon Moberly of Berea, Kentucky, who pocketed $500.

Other winners from across the globe were awarded prizes including cash, ShopFLW gift cards, hats and baits.

The Forrest Wood Cup championship was the eighth and final event of the 2017 FLW Fantasy Fishing season. Fans competed for more than $7,000 in cash and prizes from each of the tournaments in hopes of winning the $10,000 grand prize, awarded to the highest-ranked player at the end of the season. This year’s grand prize winner was Gary McGlohorn of Batesburg, South Carolina.
