Losers’ Picks: Kentucky Lake

May 10, 2004 • MLF • Archives

Welcome to the losers’ bracket of Pundits’ Picks. This is where we throw back into the water all the pundits who are culled from Punditville throughout the season. See, we still care about their picks and opinions, but they just don’t count.

Hot picks

The losers like local favorite Dan Morehead at Kentucky Lake, who earned four picks out of six pundits. Next was Mike Surman, who earned three nods. Also taking multiple votes in the Losers’ Picks were David Dudley, Shinichi Fukae, Koby Kreiger, Tom Monsoor, and Clark Wendlandt, who each garnered two votes.

Of all 10 losers and active pundits combined, Morehead and Wendlandt tied for the most picks with five apiece. Surman was next with four. Dudley, Kreiger, Monsoor and Carl Svebek each earned three.

Wal-Mart FLW Tour stop No. 5

Kentucky Lake, Benton, Ky.

May 12-15

FLW pro Carl Svebek IIICarl Svebek III

FLW pro, Siloam Springs, Ark.

Previous tournament score (Beaver Lake): 719

1) Mike Surman.

2) Darrel Robertson.

3) David Dudley.

4) Bobby Curtis.

5) Carl Svebek.

Editor’s note: Since it worked so well for him at Beaver Lake, you’ll notice that Svebek is sticking to his guns by again picking Team Castrol.

FLW pro, Manteo, N.C.

Previous tournament score: 597

1) Dan Morehead. This is a no-brainer. This is his home lake. Duh.

2) Koby Kreiger. This dude has a presence about him on this lake that puts him in a zone like no other.

3) Craig Powers. Currently known as MrCP.com, he also gets in a zone that is, as he says with his Tennessee accent, “awesome.” CP can make the grinch smile, and he will make me smile this tourney.

4) Wesley Strader. He has always done well here in the past. He is confident when it comes to this lake.

5) David Dudley. Finally, we are getting out of those stupid cold-water tournaments, so I will finally feel confident about the time of year and place.

Previous tournament score: 530

1) Tom Monsoor. He placed third on Kentucky Lake last year; he’s hot on the FLW Tour this year; and he’s overdue for a big-league win, having top-fived many times before.

2) Shinichi Fukae. I’m out of sync when it comes to picking the venerable Mr. Fukae, a man who has taken the FLW Tour by storm in his first year on the circuit. Hopefully this pick will be in phase with his wave of success.

3) Steve Kennedy. No explanation necessary: The No. 1 pro from last year’s Kentucky Lake tournament is on my list.

4) Mike Surman. Surman is another pro who is hot on tour this year and who finished in the upper echelon of last year’s event.

5) Jim Tutt. Solid performances this year, strong finish on Kentucky Lake last year, but my pick is mainly motivated by a hunch.

Previous tournament score: 478

1) Andy Morgan. Last year Kentucky Lake was too high for Morgan’s flipping stick. This year it might be too low, but I’m not counting out one of Kentucky Lake’s finest.

2) David Walker. Walker seems to excel in low-water flipping situations.

3) Dan Morehead. Covering the deep end of the spectrum, just in case the fish have already moved out.

4) Terry Bolton. He knows where they live on Kentucky Lake.

5) Shinichi Fukae. This Japanese angler has had an outstanding year, why would Kentucky Lake be any different?

Previous tournament score: 458

1) Tom Monsoor. This guy always seems to contend, at least when he doesn’t have mechanical problems. His third-place performance at Kentucky Lake last year was no fluke. Monsoor will work his swimming jig this week, but he might claim his first FLW win with a crankbait.

2) Dan Morehead. This IS Kentucky Lake, isn’t it?

3) Mike Surman. I’m no gambler, but this is a good bet. Surman has been strong this season, and he knows Kentucky Lake.

4) Clark Wendlandt. I’m running out of new ways to explain why to pick Wendlandt since most of us do it for almost every FLW tournament. But I think that pretty much covers it, doesn’t it? Any tournament, any lake.

5) Randy Blaukat. He’s fishing well this season, and he caught them well here last year.
