The FLW Tour settled on a good time to visit Wheeler Lake in Decatur, Ala. That’s the word from pro angler Ed Gettys of Stephenson, Ala.
“Mid-May is a great time go there,” Gettys said. “There will be some fish spawning, but many will have already pulled off the beds. There could be some fish caught in deeper water, but I suspect the tournament will be won shallow.”
Anglers will be allowed to lock through to Guntersville Lake, which could produce some sacks exceeding 20 pounds. Gettys expects there to be strong bites on watermelon Senkos and lizards tossed around hydrilla and milfoil beds.
Flippers who elect to stay on Wheeler should enjoy a good jig bite around bushes and other shoreline cover. Spinnerbaits and topwaters also will be productive.
Gettys call: 35-40 pounds to make the cut; 40 pounds plus to win.
