Anglers prepare to make all-important top-30 cut

CLEWISTON, Fla. – With clear, sunny skies, relatively warm temperatures and a big, bright, full moon providing an ideal setting for today’s competition, 330 anglers took to the water shortly after 7 a.m. with one goal in mind.

That goal: To make the top 30 and advance to the semifinal round of competition on Friday.

While competition will be fierce, the tournament is still wide open by most accounts. Currently, Tommy Halloway of Elberton, Ga., was in 30th place in the Pro Division with a total catch of 11 pounds, 11 ounces. However, 10 other pros were within a pound of 30th place, while another 10 anglers were within 2 pounds of the cut.

On the co-angler side, David Jester of Orange City, Fla., had the distinction of residing in the all-important 30th position after day one of competition with a total catch of 8 pounds. But like the Pro Division, competition will be stiff for today’s cut with 12 co-anglers less than two pounds away from the 30th position.

Today’s weigh-in is scheduled to take place at 3 p.m. at Roland Martin’s Marina located at 920 East Del Monte Ave., Clewiston, Fla.
