EverStart Series, Eastern Division, March 20-23
Lake Eufaula, located along the Chattahoochee River chain of impoundments on the Alabama-Georgia border, is hosting the second Eastern Division EverStart Series tournament.
Rodger Beaver, who finished second in last season’s Eufaula event, does not think fishing will be as “easy” as it was last year when the tournament was a definitive highlight of the entire FLW Outdoors season.
Before the tournament, Eufaula’s drought-stricken shores were overgrown with terrestrial grasses and vegetation. Then the water came up and flooded the new vegetation, providing a textbook equation for great bass fishing.
The event featured numerous limits by pros and co-anglers alike. Beaver, who lives in nearby Leesburg, Ga., says he can hardly remember a time when the lake was so productive.
“I have never seen so many fish up shallow that early (February) on Eufaula,” he says. “I mean you could literally pull up along any weed line, make a cast, and catch a fish.”
Much of the shoreline grass that grew up during the drought has died since being inundated with water. “There is not much of it left, so fishing will not be as easy this season,” Beaver says. “It will still be really good, but not as easy.”
Look for big spinner baits, crankbaits and Carolina rigs to work well on Eufaula’s pre-spawn bass.
