Opening-round cuts to be made today
MANNING, S.C. – The tournament field of 175 boats took off from John C. Land boat ramp on Lake Marion at 7 a.m. to begin competition for the second day of the two-day opening round at the $210,000 EverStart Series Eastern Division event at Santee Cooper lakes. The fields will be pared down to the top 20 anglers in each division following today’s weigh-in.
Today’s cut weights in both divisions appear as if they will be higher than many competitors expected coming into this competition. On the pro side, a two-day combined weight of 21 or 22 pounds was initially considered the mark to shoot for to make the top 20. But a surprising number of big bass brought in by pros on day one has pushed cut estimates up to 24 or 25 pounds or more. Look for the co-anglers to have to accumulate around 12 pounds to make the cut.
On the other hand, the low-pressure front that moved through Central South Carolina yesterday and prompted the active spawning bass bite has passed. Slightly cooler temperatures could also chill out catch production.
Today’s weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. at the John C. Land Boating and Sportfishing Facility south of Manning. The four-day tournament ends Saturday, when the pro winner will receive $15,000 and a Ranger boat and the co-angler winner will receive $6,000.
