Opening-round cuts Thursday
JASPER, Texas – EverStart Series Central Division anglers took off at 7 a.m. Thursday for the second day of opening-round action at Sam Rayburn Reservoir. Like yesterday, heavy skies, colder temperatures and intermittent rain could make fishing a bleak proposition for competitors unless they can manage to hook into a few of the 5-pound-plus largemouths that have been crossing the scale this week.
Trey Morgan of Goldonna, La., leads the Pro Division after one day of competition with a five-bass weight of 24 pounds, 5 ounces, and Randy Brewer of South Lake, Texas, tops the Co-angler Division with a five-bass weight of 15-9.
Both divisions will be cut to the top 20 anglers apiece based on a two-day combined weight following today’s fishing action. Cut-weight estimates hovered around 20 pounds for the pros and 15 pounds for the co-anglers.
A number of competitors brought in bass weighing 7 pounds or more Wednesday. Look for that trend to continue despite the cold-front conditions on the lake. There doesn’t seem to be a magic bullet as far as bait is concerned, either. Competitors catching the big ones on day one claimed to be using a variety of lures ranging from plastics and jigs to the ubiquitous Rat-L-Trap.
Thursday’s weigh-in begins at 3 p.m. at Twin Dikes Marina in Brookeland, Texas.
