EverStart opening-round cuts Thursday

PORT CLINTON, Ohio – Long, eastward runs and a shallower bite seemed to be the keys to success for anglers competing in EverStart Series Northern Division competition at Lake Erie Wednesday, which was a bit a of a surprise. Not surprising was the key lure: tube baits. Look for more competitors to head east to throw their tubes as they vie to make the cut in Thursday’s action.

The weather is similar to day one, with sunny conditions and temperatures forecasted in the high 80s. The south wind has picked up slightly, however, which could make the anglers’ runs on open water a tougher prospect on day two.

Local rookie Rob Webber of Elyria, Ohio, led the Pro Division with a weight of 21 pounds, 3 ounces Wednesday while Robert Saros of Mishawaka, Ind., led the Co-angler Division with 18-10.

Both divisions will be cut to the top 20 anglers apiece based on a two-day combined weight following Thursday’s fishing action. While the catch limits were down by Lake Erie standards on Wednesday, pros still needed more than 17 pounds to land in the top 20. So look for the pro cut weight to hover around the requisite 30 to 32 pounds, which is the norm on Lake Erie. The co-anglers are staring at about a 22- to 24-pound cut weight.

Thursday’s weigh-in begins at 2:30 p.m. at Dempsey State Access located on Bayshore Road in Marblehead, Ohio.
