Bass-fishing prospects at West Point Lake could be on the verge of busting wide open when the Stren Series Southeast Division rolls into LaGrange, Ga., Feb. 15-18. That’s the word from FLW Tour pro Tony Couch of Buckhead, Ga.
“All it will take are a few days of warm weather before the tournament to turn it into a slugfest,” Couch said. “If the water warms up 3 or 4 degrees, the largemouths will head to the banks – lots of them. If it stays cold, spotted bass will be the main deal, and the weights will be cut in half.”
Couch suggested the following patterns for the contrasting scenarios:
• In warm weather, key on shoreline brush, manmade brush piles and rocky points in water ranging from 2 to 5 feet. Small cranks, spinnerbaits, Rat-L-Traps and jigs will be the order of the day. Warming water will bode well for flippers.
• In chilly conditions, Carolina rigs and lightweight jigs crawled around rocky points and brush piles in 10 to 15 feet of water will shine.
Couch’s call: 24 pounds to make the top 10; 27 pounds to win. Dice the weights in half if water temps are in the low 50s.
