Rush wins Red Man bass event on Lake Shasta

REDDING, Calif. – Dave Rush of Palermo, Calif., out-fished 49 competitors Saturday to earn $2,566 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Western Division event on Lake Shasta.

Rush caught five bass weighing 11 pounds, 10 ounces during the one-day event to top Peter Jenson of Roseville, Calif., who finished with a five-bass catch of 9-13 worth $1,283. Rush caught his limit on a blue Zara Spook near points in the Sacramento River.

David Symmons of Pinole, Calif., took third place and collected $642 with five bass weighing 9-0, while Rob Pitt of Redding, Calif., placed fourth and earned $556 with five bass weighing 8-11. Pitt also won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $245 with a 3-pound, 3-ounce largemouth that he caught out of the Sacramento River on a green plastic worm.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,283 went to Jared Stone of Santa Rosa, Calif., who topped 49 competitors with five bass weighing 13-8. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $642 went to Jirii Sakata of Manteca, Calif., for five bass weighing 10-7, while Gary Morris of Pleasanton, Calif., took third place and $321 with five bass weighing 7-15.

Stone won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $122 with an 8-pound, 2-ounce bass he on a white fluke in the Sacramento River.

Craig Miller of Danville, Calif., won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures. He caught five bass weighing 5-1.

Overall, 415 bass weighing 532 pound, 11 ounces were caught, including 68 five-bass limits.

On July 29, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit Cal Delta for the fourth of five events in the Western Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Cal Delta, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Russell wins Red Man bass event on Fort Gibson Lake

WAGONER, Okla. – Brian Russell, 27, of Ada, Okla., out-fished 160 competitors Saturday to earn $5,128 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Okie Division event on Fort Gibson Lake.

After weathering high winds and pouring rain that delayed the tournament for several hours, Russell caught five largemouth bass weighing 15 pounds, 2 ounces during the one-day event to edge out Edwin Evers of Mannsville, Okla., who finished with a four-bass catch of 14-0 worth $2,564. Russell caught his limit, including a 5-pound, 14-ounce largemouth, casting a spider jig in the main lake.

Shonn Goodwin of Moore, Okla., took third place and collected $1,282 with five bass weighing 13-11. Joe Buffalow of Tonkawa, Okla., placed fourth and earned $1,111 with four bass weighing 13-10, while Mark Goines of Shady Point, Okla., placed fifth and earned $1,026 with three bass weighing 10-11.

Nick Muzliakouich of Wagoner, Okla., won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $800 for a 6-pound, 5-ounce bass that he caught on a crankbait.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $2,564 went to Ed Riner, 35, of Owasso, Okla., who topped 160 competitors with three bass weighing 11-6. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,282 went to Billy Cox of Salina, Okla., with three bass weighing 10-10, while C.E. Carlile of Broken Arrow, Okla., took third place and $641 with two bass weighing 7-8.

Jimmy Green, of Miami, Okla., won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $400 with a 7-pound, 7-ounce bass he caught on a crankbait. The catch also was good enough to put him in fourth place for another $556.

Ken Hagar of Jay, Okla., won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures. He caught two bass weighing 8-8.

On June 17, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit Lake Eufaula for the third of five events in the Okie Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Grand Lake, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Johnson wins Red Man bass event on Potomac River

WOODBRIDGE, Va. – Carl Johnson, a 48-year-old carpenter from Highland Springs, Va., out-fished 198 competitors Saturday to earn $6,027 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Piedmont Division event on the Potomac River.

Johnson caught five largemouth bass weighing 20 pounds, 6 ounces during the one-day event to top Tony Black of Manassas, Va., who finished with a five-bass catch of 19-1 worth $3,014. Johnson caught his limit, including a 5-pound, 5-ounce largemouth, on a Carolina-rigged lizard.

Chris Baldwin of Lexington, N.C., took third place and collected $1,507 with five bass weighing 18-4. Kelly Pratt of Williamsburg, Va., placed fourth and earned $1,306 with five bass weighing 17-7, while David Harp of Chapel Hill, N.C., placed fifth and earned $1206 with five bass weighing 17-1.

Black, a 32-year-old police officer, won the Abu Garcia Big Bass Award in the Boater Division and collected $990 for a 5-pound, 8-ounce bass that he caught on a Carolina rig in 4 feet of water.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $3,014 went to Jerry Comperatore, 48, of Tarentum, Pa., who topped 198 competitors with five bass weighing 17-0. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,507 went to David Williams of Fredericksburg, Va., for five bass weighing 13-6, while Scott Amig of Hanover, Pa., took third place and $753 with five bass weighing 13-0.

Comperatore won the co-angler Abu Garcia Big Bass Award of $495 with a 5-pound, 7-ounce bass he caught out of stained water on a Berkley Power Bait.

J. T. Kinney, 25, of Frostburg, Md., won the Berkley Power Bait award, a package of baits valued at $200, for the heaviest overall catch on Power Bait or Frenzy lures. He caught five bass weighing 13-0 flipping wood in Nangimory Creek.

On June 10, the Red Man Tournament Trail will visit Kerr Lake for the third of five events in the Piedmont Division. The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 30-Oct. 1 on Kerr Lake, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Coble wins Red Man bass event on Grand Lake

GROVE, Okla. – Kelly Coble of Conway, Ark., out-fished 109 competitors Saturday to earn $4,033 and 50 CITGO Challenge Points on the boater side of the Red Man Tournament Trail’s Ozark Division event on Grand Lake.

Coble caught five largemouth bass weighing 20 pounds, 3 ounces during the one-day event to top Bill Reed of Springfield, Mo., who finished with a five-bass catch of 16-6 worth $2,017.

Brady Meredith of Fayetteville, Ark., took third place and collected $1,008 with five bass weighing 15-0. Lee Wubbels of Lincoln, Neb., placed fourth and earned $874 with three bass weighing 14-13, while Jim Eakins of Nixa, Mo., placed fifth and earned $807 with five bass weighing 14-8.

First place in the Co-Angler Division and $1,887 went to Michael Cotton of Louisburg, Kan., who topped 102 competitors with five bass weighing 16-2. Second place in the Co-Angler Division and $944 went to Terry Bowers of Belton, Mo., with four bass weighing 13-12, while Joe Gerth of Reeds Spring, Mo., took third place and $472 with five bass weighing 12-14.

The boater with the most CITGO Challenge points after the division’s season finale, a two-day Super Tournament Sept. 23-24 on Lake Truman, will be declared the Divisional Points Champion and awarded $1,000. The co-angler amassing the most points by the end of the season will receive $500.

Operation Bass was founded in 1979 on the principle that working anglers should be able to fish competitively without interfering with jobs and family. The trail’s championship event, the Red Man All-American, awards $100,000 to the winning boater and $50,000 to the winning co-angler. The highest placing CITGO Divisional Points Champion at the All-American receives $10,000 in the Boater Division and $2,500 in the Co-Angler Division. Overall, more than $5.7 million could be awarded in 2000 based on full fields in each of the series’ 119 events nationwide.
