BENTON, Ky. – Veteran BFL angler David Young of Mayfield, Ky., has been released from Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville and is resting at home after undergoing neck surgery Monday following a boating accident during the BFL Regional Championship Oct. 19 on Kentucky Lake.

Co-angler Gary York of Jamestown, Tenn., was with Young when the accident occurred, but he was uninjured. Young, however, was taken to Murray-Calloway County Hospital and then by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was treated for lacerations to the head as well as neck and chest injuries.

According to reports from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, Young’s outboard apparently hit some sort of underwater structure in shallow water. The motor was subsequently dislodged from the boat, striking Young.

Boater Whitney Stephens of Piketon, Ohio, and co-angler Bill Benford of Phil Campbell, Ala., arrived on the scene shortly after the accident occurred and transported Young to Kenlake State Resort Park. The pair called tournament officials en route and an ambulance was immediately dispatched.

According to York, he and Young had just stopped to pump water on their fish. The accident occurred shortly after the pair started back up and had the boat on plane.

The thoughts and prayers of the entire FLW Outdoors staff are with Young and his family.
