Perhaps David Dudley of Manteo, N.C., summed it up best yesterday: “What makes you a hero on this lake is one big bite. You can have a little, old 7-pound limit, catch a five-pounder and suddenly you are Mr. Rico Suave.”

Dudley is right. And so far that Mr. Suave of the week in the EverStart Series tournament has been Tony Christian of Hull, Ga. Each day of the competition he has been able to boat a big largemouth to go with his stringer. Can he catch another one today?

“I hope so,” said Christian before takeoff this morning. “That place has had some big fish in it. I just hope there are a couple left.”

Christian has been fishing his hot spot for a about an hour ever day to get some quality largemouths. Today he is going to stay in there most of the day and see just how many fish the place holds.

“I really don’t know what to expect, but I am pretty excited right now,” he said.

One thing is for sure: Christian will not have to deal with much of a condition change. About the only thing more consistent than Christian this week has been Lake Martin’s weather. Every day looks just like the last: dreary, drizzly and dark.

The only difference anglers will find today is that the lake rose another few inches last night.

Christian is being chased by three Alexander City natives: BJ Barnett (second), Wayne Waldrop (third) and Ted Caldwell (10th). Do any of the local boys have any tricks up their sleeves?

We will find out at today’s weigh-in at the Alexander City Wal-Mart, 2643 Highway 280 W., at 4 p.m.
