A northeast wind howled down the Flint River this morning causing a little shake up during the first half of the final day. Leader Tim Reneau was having to hold his boat into the wind so he could pitch into mats of hydrilla that were being battered by waves – not the best of flipping conditions. As of 11 a.m. Reneau had just two fish.

Meanwhile, second place pro Clint Brown was gaining some serious ground on Reneau as Brown had boxed four solid keepers for about 11 pounds on his very first spot – all caught from protected backwaters with a swimjig.

Brown was feeling pretty optimistic about his day saying, “This is the most weight I’ve in the livewell this early all week and I still have a lot of good stuff to hit.”

Others gaining steam early included third place Ken Ellis who had sacked a solid limit on his wacky rigs.

At 11 a.m. Rodger Beaver had two in the box and Clayton Batts boated his first keeper, a solid four pounder. Both Beaver and Batts were fishing grass on the lower end of the lake. Beaver was dragging a Carolina rig and Batts was battling the wind on the west side of the lake chucking a spinnerbait at.

John Hunter only had two fish, but they were the right size – he is nearing the 10-pound mark. A couple of more like that and Hunter could make it interesting this afternoon.

Many of the leaders have been catching their better fish later in the day, so anything can still happen in the last hour of competition.
